DAY 1 - Arrival in Madrid
On Day 1, you will arrive in the fantastic city of Madrid. Depending on your arrival time, you can follow one of our recommended plans for what to do in Madrid today - whether that be a panoramic tour of the city, a cultural itinerary, or shopping in Madrid. In the evening, you will immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Spain’s capital city and its famous gastronomy. Tonight, you will enjoy a wine and food pairing session at a local vinoteca.
You will spend the night in the hotel that we have specially selected for you. It is very conveniently located in the city center and just a short walk from the train station for your day trip to Toledo.
Your hotel is also close to the Retiro Park and located on the ´golden mile´ of art museums and galleries in Madrid. At very short walking distance, you will find three of the most important art museums in the world: the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen Museums. This area is also next to the Retiro Park, the green heart of the city, where romantic walks, a beautiful lake with row boats, and exhibitions in the Crystal Palace await. The Plaza Mayor (main square), Puerta del Sol, Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, Bernabéu stadium, Egyptian Temple of Debod, Gran Vía, historical monuments, and designer shops and small boutiques are just a taste of what Madrid has to offer.
DAY 2 – Day trip to Toledo
After enjoying a buffet breakfast at your hotel, you will walk from your hotel to the train station to catch your train to Toledo. With a journey of just 33 minutes, you will arrive in Toledo by high-speed train and discover the highlights of this fascinating city.
Toledo is ancient city (more than 2,000 years old!) located on a hill surrounded by the impressive Tajo River. Known as the “city of the three cultures”, Toledo has a unique and special history during which Christians, Jews, and Muslims co-existed in the city during the Middle Ages. This mix of cultures is still evident in the streets of Toledo today where churches (the Cathedral is one of the largest in Spain), synagogues (such as El Tránsito or Santa María La Blanca), and mosques (such as Cristo de la Luz) can be visited all within walking distance from each other. The city is also well-known for its connection to the Cretan painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos (most widely known as El Greco) as he painted some of his greatest works in Toledo. Also not to be missed are notable architectural gems, such as the Alcázar fortress and the Renaissance architecture spread throughout the city.
At a short distance from the Cathedral is one of the best restaurants in Toledo where we have booked your lunch for the day. You will enjoy a special gastronomic menu accompanied by local wine. Before heading back to the train station (a 15 minute walk), you will have free time to go shopping and explore the streets of Toledo, or take the panoramic train around the surroundings of the city to really enjoy the beautiful views of Toledo from the other side of the Tajo River.
