Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia, is a city full of history, legends, and traditions. Legend has it that the Apostle James arrived to these lands to proclaim the word of Jesus and that he had great success with the people in the area. Upon his return to the Holy Land, the Romans ordered his death. Afterwards, some of his disciples took him back to Galicia and buried him there, which is how the city was created and was named, Santiago (or, Sant-Yago, Jacobo and Jaime, in Galician).

The City of Santiago, apart from being a place of worship for many Christians, has various artistic and patrimonial attractions that should be visited. The Cathedral is one of the most impressive Christian churches in Spain, and is the final point of a long pilgrimage that thousands of people do every year across northern Spain, The various artistic styles that can be seen throughout the cathedral are determined by the different renovations and extensions that have occurred since the first church was built, until the last that was completed in the 13th century. The Portico of Glory, the facades, the Royal Pantheon with the tombs of different Kings of Leon, and the crypt with the remains of the apostle, all stand out, but most unique is the botafumeiro (an incensory, or thurible) that is only used on the 25th of July, the Day of Santiago, but is normally on continuous exhibition. If you go at any other time, you’ll see the replica that is used daily.
