GASTRONOMIC GETAWAY IN LA CORUÑA. THINGS TO DO:

The history of La Coruña is written since pre-Roman times, when the Castreña and Ártabro tribes occupied the region creating settlements like the Castro de Elviña dated back to the 3rd century BC. It was not until the arrival of the Romans when the area of La Coruña began to be recorded in books. Julius Caesar arrived at the gates of what they called Brigantium and thus was baptized the city that was at the end of a commercial route that ended in the Atlantic.

The lighthouse of La Coruña has been declared as the oldest in the world that is sitll in use today. In the first century AC, Ptolemy wrote about this lighthouse and its importance in the commercial route in which La Coruña was an intermediate point. Today, the Torre de Hércules is one of the most visited monuments of the city. Its exterior was completely renovated in the 18th century.

The San Antón Castle is also very interesting to visit. It is in the opposite direction of the Torre de Hercules and is a 16th century fortress located in the Ría de Coruña. Today, it houses the archaeological museum of the city.

In the old town, we can find various monuments of interest. Starting with the Plaza de María Pita, here you can find the impressive city hall building and a statue of the local heroine for which the plaza is named after. During a siege by the English navy and after seeing her husband die, María Pita killed the English Admiral Francis Drake´s brother with a spear and helped fight the English alongside many other women to defend the city of La Coruña. Today, there is a museum dedicated to her story (Casa-Museo María Pita).
Just behind the museum, you can visit one of the most beautiful churches of the city, La Colegiata de Santa María. Of Romanesque style, this collegiate church was dedicated to the sailors and it was tradition for them to visit the church as soon as they reached land. Of Romanesque style, there are also the church of Santa María and Santiago.
There are remnants of the wall that once surrounded the old part of the city located near the castle.
We hope you enjoy your gastronomic getaway in La Coruña.
