Lugo was founded by the Romans in an attempt to expand the Empire throughout the Iberian península. The area was full of Roman hill forts in which the Gallaic Celts were settled.
In the 3rd century, during the decline of the Empire, the wall that remains today was built. The wall is made of granite and covered by slate plates. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site since the year 2000. Without a doubt, this is one of the monuments worth visiting in the city. We recommend walking towards the top of the wall to contemplate Lugo from up high. An interesting fact is that this wall is twinned with the Great Wall of China.
Other outstanding Roman constructions are the thermal baths in which now sits the “Balneario de Lugo”, where you can enjoy the spa circuit. Also, there is the Roman bridge that crosses over the Miño river.
Another monument worth a visit is the Santa María Cathedral, which was built in almost all of the architectural styles that passed through there. It began as Romanesque, followed by Gothic and Baroque to Neoclassical. The Church of San Pedro, of Gothic style, was once linked to a convent founded in the 17th century until the confiscation of Mendizabal in the 12th century when the convent was closed and the spaces converted for different public uses. Today, we find here the Provincial Museum of Lugo.
Another building we also recommend visiting is the old Lugo prison located in the center of the city. It has been rehabilitated and can be visited.
On the outskirts of Lugo, you can always visit the D.O. Ribeira Sacra wine region where the native grapes dominate.
And, of course, there is the local gastronomy that you will have the opportunity to try.
Y por supuesto la gastronomía que tendrás la oportunidad de probar.

We hope that you enjoy your wine and gastronomy getaway in Lugo.
