What can you expect from this San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, tapas, and wine tour?
Gastronomy is one of the hallmarks of Basque identity and local txacoli wine is a perfect match for all treasure brought by the Cantabrian Sea.
Located in a privileged area near Bilbao, the small family-owned winery you will visit is located next to vineyards at an old traditional Basque “caserío”. The winery produces some of the best white txacoli wines in Basque Country. They also produce red wines and spirits.
During the winery visit, you will learn about the special conditions of the vineyard and about production of txacoli wines, as well as local spirits.
Along with the wine tasting, you will be served plates of some of the best local gourmet products (selection of Ibericos, Idiazabal cheese, anchovies, Gernika peppers, and Cantabrian tuna).
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
It has been said that John the Baptist himself set foot on the island of Gaztelugatxe. Despite this not having been proved, the landscape, small church at the top of the hill, and the 241 steps that zigzag connecting the island with the mainland certainly do not disappoint.
The small church dates from the 10th century but has had to be rebuilt several times due to attacks and fires. The island became a strategic defensive outpost and in 1596 it witnessed an attack by Sir Francis Drake himself.
Today, there are several traditional pilgrimages to the church, including one by local fishermen at the start of the fishing season.
The trek is composed of 2 different stages. The first stage* is a dirt and rocky path (can be slippery on rainy days) that winds steeply down to the base where the second phase begins. This second phase is made up of a long stairway with 241 steps that lead to the chapel on the top of the islet. The trek is approximately 1.5 km each way, 3 km in total.
If you decide to skip the long trek due to physical limitations or weather conditions, you will have the opportunity to enjoy fantastic panoramic views of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and the Cantabrian Sea. There is an easier and shorter trek you can take with a magnificent viewing point. With the remaining time before your winery visit, your driver will take you to Bermeo** to enjoy this beautiful fishing village and its harbour.
*The first stage of the trek is very steep and is not recommended for everyone. Suitable footwear is necessary and it is advisable to carry a bottle of water.
**Transfer to Bermeo only included if long trek is skipped and time allows. The start time of your winery visit is fixed and late arrivals will not be admitted.
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones fan or not, the natural and man-made beauty that makes San Juan de Gaztelugatxe will leave you in awe. As one of the main Game of Thrones filming locations in season 7, fans of the series will have a special interest to walk along the same glorious footbridge walked on by Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, minus the dragons circling above of course. The islet that is connected to the mainland by a winding stone path was used to represent the mystical island of Dragonstone, the ancestral home of House Targaryen.
