Foodie Getaway at PARADOR of CANGAS de ONÍS. What to do?

A getaway in Cangas de Onís means multitude of activities related to: history, gastronomy, culture and nature. Starting with the historic activities, this Parador Hotel is one of the buildings which has the most history to it as it was formerly the monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva. This Romanesque-style monastery belonged to the Order of Saint Benedict and is a fine example of the remaining Asturian-Romanesque architecture. It was built by Alfonso I, the son-in-law of Don Pelayo, as a church, and eventually became a monastery centuries after. We recommend a visit to the church.

The most picturesque place in Cangas is probably the Roman Bridge, however is not actually a “Roman”; it is worthy to visit anyway. It called the Roman Bridge because Romans used it to cross the Sella River. Closeby you will find the Sanctuary of Covadonga with a basilica and the Holy Cave where a Hermitage is located. This place is full of pilgrims who pray to Covadonga’s Madonna. Covadonga is where Pelayo won the battle against the Muslim troops and the Asturian Kingdom was created.

Moreover, visiting Cabrales you will have the chance to learn and try the most famous cheese in Asturias - Cabrales cheese; a blue cheese which is spicy and strong, nevertheless tasty.
In addition to everything previously mentioned, the list of splendid things you can do on this getaway at the Parador in Cangas de Onís is never-ending.
