How to get to Ribera del Duero

Best ways to get to Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero is one of the most famous D.O. (Designation of Origin) wine regions in Spain (along with Rioja and Sherry).   In this article, we will cover how to get to Ribera del Duero from different areas of Spain.

The Ribera del Duero wine region can be found along the Northern plateau of Spain, right in the middle of Rioja and Madrid. To travel from Madrid you will have to cover around 160km-200km to get to any one of Ribera del Duero´s wineries. The most important local areas for wine are Peñafie, Roa and Aranda del Duero. It is not difficult to travel to either of these areas by car or by bus, mainly because of the simple road layouts, although some rural wineries may be a little harder to find if they are located outside of these towns. If you want to taste at different wineries we recommend you book a hotel in Ribera del Duero. There are very interesting hotels in the area, some of which enjoy impressive views or are located in ancient buildings.

The Duero Valley is a region defined by a climate of extremes- with ice in winter and sweltering heat mid-summer- which co-incidentally works very well for wine production.

Given that you may be driving to the wineries, it is important to keep in mind the legal restrictions for drinking alcohol and driving. We recommend you join a tasting tour from Madrid to avoid drinking and driving.

At the wineries, you may use spittoons to not consume the alcohol being tasted, and allow you to take part in the wine tasting, but continue a safe driving journey afterward. If you would like an interesting itinerary for a road trip that includes Ribera del Duero, we suggest you have a look at this road trip from Madrid
