A Total Solar Eclipse in Rioja – Summer 2026
People from La Rioja, along with everyone visiting the region in the summer of 2026, will get the chance to witness something truly extraordinary: a total solar eclipse. This rare astronomical event hasn’t happened here since 2015, and on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the whole of La Rioja will be within the so called “path of totality” of the eclipse. It’s the perfect excuse to experience not only the eclipse, but also the stunning landscapes, gastronomy, wines, and wineries that make the Rioja region so special.
Thanks to its low population (it’s actually the least populated of Spain’s autonomous communities), its many cloudless days, and the absence of big urban areas, Rioja is already a paradise for stargazing. For astronomy lovers, the region offers countless magical spots to enjoy the night sky—and this eclipse will make them shine even brighter.
The eclipse will enter Spain around 7:30 p.m., arriving first on the Galician coast after beginning its journey in Greenland and grazing eastern Iceland. An hour later, it will reach totality—when the Moon completely covers the Sun for a brief moment. Experts talk about a “central band,” the best viewing strip where the eclipse lasts longest. Spain will be one of the very best places in the world to enjoy this eclipse, and Rioja is right in that sweet spot.
But here’s the catch: the total eclipse will last less than 2 minutes. In Logroño, Rioja’s capital (not the ideal place because of all the city lights!), the eclipse will start at 7:33 p.m., with totality at 8:28 p.m., lasting just 1 minute and 28 seconds. So don’t blink—or you might miss it.
Why is this eclipse such a big deal?
To put things in perspective: the last time a total solar eclipse like this was visible in Spain was back in 1905. And for continental Europe, we need to go back to 1999. So yes—this is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of event.
Beyond Rioja, you’ll also be able to enjoy the eclipse from A Coruña, Oviedo, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valencia, and even Palma de Mallorca. So if your travel plans don’t bring you to Rioja but you’ll be in any of those spots—you’re still in luck.
Before we get into some local tips, let’s quickly recap what a total solar eclipse actually is.
It happens when the Moon lines up perfectly in front of the Sun, blocking it completely and leaving only its glowing “corona” visible. That’s what makes it different from a partial eclipse (where only part of the Sun is hidden) or an annular eclipse (where a ring of light remains visible). What makes the total eclipse so special is that, for a few minutes, day suddenly turns into night—and you can see aspects of the Sun that are normally invisible.
General tips for enjoying a total solar eclipse
- Protect your eyes, no exceptions. Never look directly at the Sun without eclipse glasses or another safe method of viewing. Even when it looks covered—don’t risk it.
- Arrive early. Good spots will fill up fast.
- Look for a clear horizon. Avoid buildings, trees, or mountains blocking your view, especially since this eclipse happens at sunset.
- Pack the basics. Water, snacks, a hat (remember: there’s still Sun before the eclipse), and maybe a chair for comfort. If you plan to stick around for dinner outdoors, bring a jacket—it gets chilly once the Sun sets.
- Enjoy the atmosphere. Don’t just watch the clock; notice how the light, temperature, and even the sounds around you change. It’s magical.
Tips for watching the eclipse in Rioja
- Choose your viewpoint wisely. Rural areas, low hills, or open parks with western views are ideal. We love the northern side of the Ebro River near the Sierra de Cantabria—full of mystical spots like dolmens and small chapels surrounded by vineyards. They’re less crowded and perfect for this occasion.
Sure, you’ll hear about famous places like the San Vicente de la Sonsierra fortress, the upper part of Labastida, or the Collado promenade in Laguardia. They’re gorgeous, but also likely to be crowded and tricky to reach by car. Our advice? Take one of the small country roads branching off the N-232 and find your own peaceful spot.
Plan your transport and lodging early. August is high season, and the eclipse will attract thousands of visitors. We leave here a link with our recommended hotels in Rioja.
Mind the sunset. Since the eclipse happens late in the day, make sure your chosen horizon is clear to the west.
Capture the moment safely. If you want photos, use a proper solar filter for your camera or phone to avoid damage.
Enjoy Rioja itself. Combine the eclipse with a walk, picnic, or winery visit. The vineyards and rolling hills make the perfect setting.
Make the most of your time in Rioja
Why not turn the eclipse into an excuse for some wine tourism? Book a stay in the charming village of Laguardia, where you can enjoy summer evenings by the pool. Visit a few wineries—some even include a traditional Riojan meal paired with wine tastings, which is hard to beat. Have a look at the different wine tours we organise in the area and which can be customised to include the eclipse if needed (though it would make more sense to end a wine tour, rest at the hotel, and then walk to a good view-point not far from the hotel or accomodation)
And if you’re up for something truly memorable: try being a winemaker for a day. It’s a unique, hands-on activity that’s both fun and unforgettable—perfect with friends or family.
