Things to do in Laguardia, Rioja

What to do in Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa

Laguardia is a walled town. The Wall was erected by the order of Sancho, an important monarch from Navarre. Laguardia retains its old enclosure, the walls and doors for access to the town. Its location on a high, facing the Sierra de Cantabria, offers extraordinary views of the colors of the Rioja area. Laguardia has a number of houses with interesting facades. In this post, we are going to cover the best things to do in Laguardia in one day. The town is also filled with more modest facades, where red peppers can be hung on strings. All this increases the chromaticism of the cobbled streets of Laguardia. You can enjoy Laguardia with this spa getaway in Rioja.

Laguardia medieval walls

Also famous for being the birthplace of Samaniego, fabulist huge impact. Samiego has left to Laguardia his fables and the admirable house where he was born. The Church of Santa María de los Reyes, the tenth century, was perhaps a Templar Monastery. It is another attraction of Laguardia. It is also worth to visit the church of Santa María de Berberana, with its Romanesque chapel which  is the only one in La Rioja with a square apse. Near Laguardia there are a number of villages with lots of interest and beautiful areas for hiking or enjoying nature, such as Hoya, of great archaeological interest. There are a number of restaurants that will give joy to the most discerning palates within the walls.

Charming villages Spain Laguardia

What other things can you do in Laguardia? First, and most importantly undoubtedly, is to walk along the cobblestone streets. It is a marvel to roam around and admire the noble houses, beautiful balconies, Plaza Mayor …

Most tourists find the romantic walk of  El Collado a very special place. The walk is located in the northern part of the town. The walk can be started by the East or West of Laguardia. This walk offers beautiful trees and views of the Sierra de Cantabria (and Ysios) Breathtaking indeed!

Another great attraction of Laguardia is the Church of Santa Maria de los Reyes and his lovely porch. The clock in the Plaza Mayor, the Abbey Tower and the Church of San Bautista are three important arguments for the visit to Laguardia.

The underground cellars of Laguardia

Something we cannot of course forget about and which also deserves a visit are the local wineries. Laguardia itself is a large underground cellar. Some of the cellars of the Houses and mansions can be visited today (either as a restaurant, or even because they still age wine). The surrondings of Laguardia offer beautiful scenery of vineyards. We recommend the road from Laguardia to Lapuebla de la Barca, though there are many more with a high interest for those who love a landscape full of vineyards.

The wineries and local wine are of great quality. The local cuisine of Laguardia is high quality. The city also offers a number of restaurants to eat at reasonable prices with quality products. Taverns with pintxos and a good selection of local food stores and wine shops logical

Laguardia pilgrim Camino

There are many more arguments to visit Laguardia. Highly recommend, and visible from the walled city, and are protected biotypes outside of Laguardia.
