Local grapes to enjoy whilst in Barcelona
Wine has been produced here in Barcelona from before roman times. Imagine local producers and commerce with Mediterranean neighbours. Those wines are very differnt from the ones you will find today in Barcelona, but the soils nearby are the same. Local wine makers have found the way to bring all their potential to live.
Just outside Barcelona, a handful of wine regions offer incredible variety, quality, and character, and some of them are often at better value than more famous European appellations (though thi si schanging). Penedès, one of the largest and most accessible regions south of Barcelona, is best known for Cava, Spain’s traditional-method sparkling wine. Made primarily from local grapes like Macabeu, Xarel·lo, and Parellada, these wines are fresh, citrusy, and high in acidity, with some premium versions showing complexity and aging potential. Still whites and reds from Penedès also surprise with their quality and affordability.
Head inland to the rugged hills of Priorat, and you’ll find one of Spain’s most prestigious DOQs. Here, slate soils (called llicorella) and old vines produce intense, structured reds mainly from Garnacha and Cariñena. These wines are rich, often high in alcohol, and built to age. For a more budget-friendly alternative, neighboring Montsant offers similarly expressive reds, often from the same grapes and terroirs. Sometimes vines sit next to each other, and it is impossible to tell which are in Montsant or Priorat.
To the north of Barcelona, Alella—one of Spain’s smallest and oldest DOs—specializes in elegant, salty whites from Pansa Blanca (a local name for Xarel·lo), grown in granite-rich soils near the Mediterranean.
Together, these regions show the range of Catalan wine: coastal freshness, mountain power, and village charm, all within easy reach of Barcelona. And remeber, if you cannot leave the city, follow our list of recommend wine bars to ensure you taste “the real thing”
