How to get to Ribera del Duero

Best ways to get to Ribera del Duero

Updated on: April 23, 2026

Ribera del Duero is one of the most famous D.O. (Designation of Origin) wine regions in Spain (along with Rioja and Sherry).   In this article, we will cover how to get to Ribera del Duero from Madrid, but also from different areas of Spain.

The Ribera del Duero wine region can be found along the Northern plateau of Spain, right in the middle of Rioja and Madrid. To travel from Madrid you will have to cover around 160km-200km to get to any one of Ribera del Duero´s wineries. The most important local areas for wine are Peñafie, Roa and Aranda del Duero. It is not difficult to travel to either of these areas by car or by bus, mainly because of the simple road layouts, although some rural wineries may be a little harder to find if they are located outside of these towns. If you want to taste at different wineries we recommend you book a hotel in Ribera del Duero. There are very interesting hotels in the area, some of which enjoy impressive views or are located in ancient buildings.

Is 1 day enough to enjoy Ribera del Duero?

One of the first questions you need to ask yourself is how much time to spend in Ribera del Duero. It’s a fantastic wine region in Spain, and if you enjoy visiting less crowded, more authentic areas of a country, it will surely be very rewarding. The main decision is whether one day is enough or if you prefer to spend more time. From our experience:

  • One day in Ribera del Duero is enough if you want to see a few wineries of interest, enjoy the landscape, and discover its gastronomy.
  • If you want to explore some of its towns, like Peñafiel, or stay at a hotel near the vineyards, it’s better to consider spending the night.

Something important to keep in mind if you want to visit wineries is that the distances between the different wineries—and between wineries and hotels—are long. Also, it’s common to encounter alcohol checkpoints by the Guardia Civil in the area. In Spain, tolerance for alcohol while driving is very low. If you’re going to visit wineries, make sure that the person driving does not drink.

If you want to spend just 1 day of your holiday in Ribera del Duero, the best way to enjoy it from Madrid is with a day tour. We propose 2 different group tours, both excellent and with great value for money (bearing in mind you are driven, with an expert guide, enjoy tastings at several wineries…) and several private tours for a more premium experience.

Practical information

The Duero Valley is a region defined by a climate of extremes- with ice in winter and sweltering heat mid-summer- which co-incidentally works very well for wine production. We recommend always paying attention at the weather since  the area can be cooler than expected, specially at nights.

Given that you may be driving to the wineries, it is important to keep in mind the legal restrictions for drinking alcohol and driving. We recommend you join a tasting tour from Madrid to avoid drinking and driving.

At the wineries, you may use spittoons to not consume the alcohol being tasted, and allow you to take part in the wine tasting, but continue a safe driving journey afterward. If you would like an interesting itinerary for a road trip that includes Ribera del Duero, we suggest you have a look at this road trip from Madrid.

Bus services. Whilst getting to Ribera del Duero by bus is an option (to Peñafiel or Aranda de Duero) getting to a winery will turn out to be a different story if you want to use public buses. Wineries are spread all-over the area, outside of villages, and with no bus stops nearby in almost all cases. You will need to find the services of local taxi drivers to ensure you reach wineries. Book them well in advance since there are very few taxi drivers in the area.

How to get to Ribera del Duero from... Madrid

  • BY CAR:

    Route (160 km)
Madrid – (FH* A1) – Aranda de Duero.
    FH* = Free Highway

  • We recommend you stop at Buitrago de Lozoya for a coffee and to enjoy its Walls and castle tower.
  • BY BUS
    Destination: Aranda de Duero.
    Company: Alsa.
    Trip duration: 1:30-2:00h.
One way from around 15€ Alsa.  Wineries are not located in Aranda de Duero, and it may not be easy to reach them unless you hire a taxi driver locally.

  • BY TRAIN Unfortunately, there is no obvious option to get to Ribera del Duero from Madrid by train. Taking the train from Madrid to Valladolid is one possibility. You can arrive there by high-speed train on a pleasant and short journey of about one hour. However, once there, it is not easy to access Ribera del Duero, and it is necessary to use taxis or rent a car in order to visit wineries. The problem is the usual one when visiting wine regions: if you use a taxi service, between transfers and waiting times, you end up paying a higher price than if you had used a specialized wine tour. On the other hand, if you rent a vehicle, at least one person cannot drive.
